The theremin performed by Pekkanini

The theremin is unique among musical instruments in that it is played without physical contact. The musician stands in front of the instrument and moves his or her hands in the proximity of two metal antennas. The distance from one antenna determines frequency (pitch), and the distance from the other controls amplitude (volume).
Originally a product of Russia nearly a hundred years ago, the theremin produces an eerie quality, of which the movie industry got much use throughout the twentieth century, with strange effects and haunting themes. Today, keyboard synthesizers can produce the same effects with far greater ease. So the theremin has largely fallen out of use in Hollywood, nonetheless the instrument still carries a strong niche following.
